Parent / Guardian Check-In Framework
What Parent Check-Ins Are (and Aren’t)
Parent check-ins are designed to support the family system, not to disclose youth messages or private conversations.
These check-ins may include:
• General updates on progress or engagement (not message content)
• Support for understanding youth communication styles
• Guidance around creating emotional safety at home
• Space to ask questions or share observations
Parent check-ins do not include reading youth messages, reviewing text conversations, or receiving detailed disclosures without youth consent.
Why Parent Check-Ins Matter
Youth benefit most when the adults around them understand how to:
• Reduce pressure during emotional moments
• Listen without immediately fixing or reacting
• Create space for communication to grow naturally
Parent check-ins help align support — so youth don’t feel caught between adults, and parents don’t feel shut out.
Structure & Frequency
• Parent check-ins are brief and structured
• May occur monthly or as needed
• Can be virtual or by phone
• Always centered on support, not evaluation
The exact format is tailored to each family and discussed in advance.
Shared Goal
The goal is not dependence on support —
but confidence, communication, and connection.
Support is designed to fade as skills strengthen.
